Dr. Dana G. Hoyt retired as the thirteenth president of Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in August 2020 after a successful tenure and now provides the HCS team with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in evaluating shared service models, mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships.

Before her presidency at SHSU, Dr. Hoyt served as vice president for finance and operations at SHSU and as president of National University, a prominent nonprofit institution in California. Dr. Hoyt’s career in higher education began as an accounting professor, and she held various leadership positions at Southern Methodist University, the University of Colorado at Denver, and Texas Woman’s University.

During her presidency at SHSU, she played a pivotal role in establishing an osteopathic medical school. Dr. Hoyt was heavily involved in the self-funded model of the COM, Board and State approvals as well as presenting to the COCA during the approval process of the COM. During her vice presidency at UCD, she participated in the consolidation of the downtown campus and the Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Hoyt has also held numerous leadership positions in external organizations, including chair and board member roles at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the American Academic Leadership Institute. She has served on various community and corporate boards, including Woodforest National Bank. She has received several awards and honors for her contributions to academia and the community. Dr. Hoyt earned her doctorate in business from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been a certified public accountant since 1984.
